History

 

Devi Lama is project director of the Nepal Girls Care Center (NGCC) since 1996. Before that she worked for CARE Nepal in Bajura, a remote district in far western Nepal. During those years she worked closely with Janak Rokaya who was chairperson of Community Development Organisation (CDO) Manakot. Although Devi left Bajura many years ago and works in Kathmandu for the betterment of orphaned girls, she never forgot Bajura.

 

Since 1999 Foundation VONK Projects from The Netherlands is involved in the NGCC. Devi shared a human interest story (Jhukkuli) with Theo Gouwerok who is a boardmember of VONK. This was the start of the cooperation between Devi, Janak and Theo.

Devi, Janak and Theo identified the needs of the people in Bajura and developed several projects. Since the fall of 2002 funds were raised in The Netherlands in order to finance the projects in Bajura. CDO Manakot changed its name in GIFT Bajura and is responsible for the projects in Bajura.

 

In 2004 the Dutch NGO "The Bajura Foundation" was founded.
